When terrorists (in the pre-internet era) sent video tapes to newsrooms, threatening kidnapped victims, Daniel Dayan (author of Terreur Spectacle) pointed out the role media played in this vicious circle of infotainment.

When I was threatened many years ago my lawyer said: don’t pick up the phone. If you don’t answer, he can’t threaten you.

It’s actually very similar to how perpetrators of physical abuse often blames the victim, or the victim’s reaction.
