It's always worth looking at the books being studied in Y6 and thinking "How do we prepare our children for this with earlier texts?" To get to 'The Hobbit' we also have 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' and 'Beowulf' laying the groundwork for fantasy adventure stories in prior year groups.

We don't. The majority of our pupils do not have English as their first language, so we think it is more pressing for them to learn this than add another language in the mix. Waiting until Y5 and 6 works well in this regard. Nothing in the NC says they have to study another language in Y3 and 4.

We think it works well in primary as a foundation for learning a modern language in KS3 and to build understanding of the development of English over time. Ultimately, we think Latin is just worth knowing for its own sake. We teach it for an hour a week in Y5 and 6 and follow the Minimus scheme.
