It doesn't fit the UK narrative around the #ECHR.

@andrewcutting.coe.int I served in the British infantry from 1978-1990 when homosexuality was obviously illegal. In my experience those few gay soldiers whose identity was known were protected by JNCOs and regimental hard men. This is not to deny ugly abuse elsewhere. Just a personal perspective.

Also a reminder: this happened in many parts of Government:
I applied to the Foreign Office as a languages graduate and the info pack I received stated, in black and white, “homosexuality, admitted (sic) or not, is a bar to service in the FO”. This was 1987.
