Nigerian Modernism at the Tate

Record sleeves and publications were also artistic canvases. I love High Life music as much for its looks as sounds

Nigerian Modernism at the Tate

I especially like images of craftspeople crafting, to add heft to the physicality of their objects

Nigerian Modernism at the Tate.

I realised on my collection browser that some artists works hit me especially hard, but those weren't usually what most people looked at. I wonder was my appreciation affected by the 15 years on and off I worked in Nigeria

More Nigerian Modernism at the Tate. I photographed only those works that most moved me but then saw that some would not translate into a small screen, and even those that do, you cannot get a feel for their three dimensions and scale on a phone 🤷‍♂️

Nigerian Modernism at the Tate mesmerised and saddened me that tho I knew some artists' names and styles. I had no concept of their breadth of work nor the size of their portfolios - masterpieces and their craftsmen overlooked or downplayed due their origin. Go Look See

This is a video as you can see from the moving screen. Tré is just moving very very slowly 😀

Women construction workers in 1531, stained glass window in the Begijnhof chapel Amsterdam

I bet this image isnt in many of our Renaissance stereotypes of womanhood

But the Toledo Art Museum is world famous for the quality of its collection. It may not draw large crowds but is a once in lifetime draw for anyone in the arts. Akin to other famous but off beaten track museums such as the Kroller Mueller in Arnhem

Bach, Magnificat in D, BMV243, sung by the Plantagekoor with chamber orchestra, in the English Church, Amsterdam Begijnhof, a perfect venue for chamber music

Unfortunately Austin has wised up to what packing means. My cabin bag made him instantly dejected, and he kept trying to unpack it, pulling clothes out to bring back to my room. When I left he uttered the most pitiful despairing wails and yelps.

He is an emotional terrorist.

London at 8am. Usually busy areas totally quiet #dogs

Confronting a cat. Austin ran away while barking very quietly as he retreated to emphasise his courage. Also we travelled upstairs in a Routemaster Bus for the first time and he loved the views.

Osho's piano school on Lambeth Walk includes an amazing museum of Black British childhood; what's visible from the window just a tiny fraction of his collection. Should be an intangible national treasure.

Bart. Platina, Lives of the Popes. First publ. 1479, revised by Onofrio Panvinio 1562, with woodcut portraits added 1590, this the 1610 Cologne ed. On topic for me as covers Roman history

Platina also wrote the first printed #cookbook!! De Honesta Voluptate et Valetudine, 1474, on Roman fine dining

Charing Cross to Embankment, Leicester Square to Covent Garden, and Excel to the O2 Dome (who needs that route up in the sky when there are myriad good tube/DLR connections) are the least useful one-stop routes on TFL Underground, DLR and Overground.

Today I tried The Cable Car.

Classic cars Lower Marsh, Waterloo. A regular event so it's quite usual to see classics in this part of London but never dull. Well-deserved pride in ownership and restorations.

my oldest book in English:

"The Golden Boke Of Marcus Aurelius Emperour And Eloquente Oratour" 1559

supposedly summarises his views from "Meditations" and letters. But it's deliberately biased, emphasising strong govt and respect for monarchy

That's what you get when you misuse ancients today

On a ship, the Thamesis built 1930 in Holland & docked Albert Embankment. I already smashed a glass full of red wine on the deck when the boat shifted a bit and the deck table was sloping and slippy. I bought a replacement then they very kindly comped me a third and gave Austin water and snacks 🔥💯

Pretty marginal notes with dates:

b. DXXXV (219 BCE)
c. BELLVM PVNVIC II (218 BCE)
d. DXXXV (but note the D is formed from I and a transposed C, so were they short of letters D? Or was it decorative as this format is often used on title page dates?)
e. DXXXXVI (also 218 BCE but different format)
