I picked up the Akira Toriyama Dragon Quest Illustrations book when I was at Lightbox in October. Great purchase. It's so nice to have all of those amazing little monster drawings collected in one place.

I agree! The very miniscule details are clearly filling in the blanks—for example, he gives the base of the horn bumps like a roe deer. But the fact that he accurately shows the distribution of the skin bumps and the shape of the tail hairs shows that the sketch must have been extremely detailed.

(4/4) The teeny tiny details show it wasn't drawn from life, but again, that must have been one HELL of a sketch. That, plus Dürer's masterful understanding of animals, captures the Indian rhino better in my opinion than Oudry's rather flaccid painting of Clara the rhino 200 years later.
