Another problem is if he accepts a result consistant with intl law, he will very likely lose power & maybe his life.
If Russia is routed militarily, Putin has an excape, but Ukraine is not ready yet. European & Canadian support will help, but it takes time.

Maybe Hegseth should face a firing squad. For his blatently illegal crimes against humanity, as a member of the military.
That would send a clear message to all concerned.

The irony of these trials is that it excluded the Russian collaborators (including Stalin) who started WW2 with the Nazis by dividing Poland between them, with Russian atrocities against surrendering Polish soldiers. (Worse than what the Nazis did.)

…scared to do their jobs, they should step down. Why don’t they understand that there’s safety in numbers? If they voted en masse to impeach Hegseth, they would be safer than going it alone. They could protest the murders in the Caribbean. Can’t do that? Then seriously just go back home.

You're getting 10-20y in prison, forfeiture of pay, reduction to E1 and a dishonourable discharge.
