Unfortunately, he has. He was appointed to SF's board of supervisors in '97, and did some minor stuff for the mayor prior to that. He's been weaseling up through SF/California politics for nearly 30 years 😒

Also: not everyone has the same sense of aesthetics, even within a broad ideology! Sometimes those aesthetics clash, and those form additional rifts between competing aesthetics which in turn find themselves diversely incompatible with various facets of the material. It doesn't have to be binary.

There's a 0% chance this is brand new theory, but it's a pattern I'm seeing a lot, and I've found it a useful lens when I'm trying to understand disagreements between people/groups who seem to otherwise agree.

It's also been helpful in identifying where I'm carrying useless baggage :P

I don't think it's as clear cut as "some prioritize aesthetics while others prioritize material reality" so much as a given individual will be inclined toward one or the other in different contexts. Or perhaps it's more accurate to say people perceive aesthetic itself as reality in certain contexts?
