Aw, beans!

I'm the only person with this full name, weirdly enough. Ever, as far as I can tell.
They did, but that was inevitable at some point. The only real question is: Were we at inevitability already, or do the politicians trying to revive that contract stand a chance? (Notably, the US is not at all alone in this boat.)

Good to know. It's disturbingly common to run into people who don't, even in places where this has been done for years. (I'm in Iceland.)

That's what automatic payroll deduction does, yes. This is making it so that people who are entitled to (partial) refunds of the automatic deduction also get that automatically.

I think I've heard about a case where it was "we'll kidnap this guy's kid because we can't find him", but I may be misremembering.

In either case, ICE being as bad or worse than the mob sounds about right.

Organised crime entities have done it from time to time, I believe.

Have you seen the webcomic?

Also in particular, it's way too easy to assume that this description applies to men only.

To my mind, IP is still derivative, even if the account books say it's bigger. If the other two go away so does the infrastructure to enforce IP.

The problem is that when you are used to thinking about society in terms of sports, the idea that the defence and the prosecution might have a shared interest beyond 'winning' is unthinkable.

Zoom out, zoom to Iceland, towards Reykjavík, and then go a tiny bit south.

Perhaps. The impression I got of the media coverage was "wow, this 'weird' stuff is strangely effective" right up until the point those articles appeared, though, so "the media stopped caring, so they dropped the tactic" sounds strange.

But again, it's a minor point, and I'm an outside observer.

I seem to remember articles in big papers about how Democratic strategists really didn't like it it and how the 'weird' angle stopped being used after some of those met with Walz.

I'm not going to be arsed trying to dig those up though, and am willing to concede having imagined it.
June 30, 2025 at 12:22 AM
It chiefly stopped working because Walz was directly told to stop it by the "serious people" who run the Democratic party.

The thing about the Tea Party is that the loudest figures associated with it were already starting to seem tame by 2014. Obama's election started this, but there's something more driving the push to insanity. Maybe pre-existing conspiratorial tendencies, but the US right is clearly broken now.

To me, most of economics kinda looks like the just world hypothesis turned into a field of study.
May 20, 2025 at 7:09 PM
How much of it is Obama directly and how much in reaction to the Ferguson protests and related stuff? Even when it gets to the "nobody wants to work anymore" stuff, to an outsider that talking point looked like a lot like a deflection from the George Floyd protests.

If it looks random, it probably isn't.

Sounds interesting. Too bad it's only available in select places.

Here's my take: If your governing bodies display fasces prominently, you're not allowed to say "our government can't be fascist because that term is based in a certain history".
April 29, 2025 at 9:38 PM
Pretty sure it's officially. This sounds like the sort of stuff that's supposed to be archived.
April 28, 2025 at 8:44 PM
Huh: "Elect the man who [will do stuff that happens] if Canada becomes the 51st state".

I expect this is forgetting how the sentence started when you go to end it, but considering how trumpian the tories there have been, it sure is fitting.
April 28, 2025 at 8:42 PM
It's in keeping with how the blackshirts and brownshirts recruited. More or less everything over the last couple of decades or so has been very spooky to see from the perspective of someone familiar with the original rise of fascism.
April 23, 2025 at 10:40 PM
Huh. I guess I mostly remember how many of them blatantly went "there's nothing wrong with misogyny!"

I genuinely think GG is meaningfully tied up with why MAGA made it into power and why many in that movement are so open about their hate.
