I know it’s not technically December 1st, but I already put the Olivetti away in its case … and my fingers weren’t quite done for the day.

We spoke incessantly about typewriters and cycling esoterica. We were both nerds for the tiniest of details. I regret that our threats to collaborate never bore fruit.

There’s a chance I’ll shed a tear over this beautiful machine this month.

This machine was selected for me and restored with great purpose by my dear friend, and typing mentor, Garrett Lai, who passed away in late 2020. He was an exceptional human of exceptional talent and knowledge - and even more exceptional heart. I miss him with every keystroke of a typewriter.

I use this machine less than many others, even though it is the one that launched my obsession with typewriters - and reignited my poetry writing, that had been somewhat floundering. It carries a massive amount of sentimental value, much greater than its collectible worth - which is pretty good.

Pretty satisfying to pull a machine out, blow the dust off, obsess for a little bit … and then see glimmering results. Those type slugs are producing crisp letters!

Final reveal later …

Thank you Studio 44, it’s been a pleasure working with you this month.

Nearly all - but not all - of the machines I have were similar finds. I’m broke (duh), so I hunt for cheap gems. Some end up total failures, but I’ve been very lucky, too.

My “prize” is my 1968 Hermes 3000 for $50! The margin indicator ribbon is broken, but it is otherwise exceptional.

Not all plastic bodies are bad - as long as there is a good metal frame in there.

Brother made some great machines … and some not-so-great machines. I’ve had both. I gave away a couple of less good ones, but love my Webster.

Well, the “Dorachiver,” as I call it, has been a phenomenal machine - the larger 12pt typeface is clear and bold.

I can’t remember if Kmart machines were made by SMC or Brother.

Last day of the month means last sittings with this wonderful 1955 Olivetti Studio 44. It’s been a great companion for November.

Now to decide who comes out for the month of December. Another Olivetti, or perhaps an Olympia? Maybe a very simple Smith-Corona?

Decisions, decisions …

Been awake since 3AM … there is a 3AM, if you didn’t know. I see lots of them, as a lifelong insomniac.

I remember reading Maya Angelou describe writing The Color Purple, when I was a kid in school, as the entire story and characters existing on their own, and how she was merely the portal for them to enter this world. That struck me profoundly and never left me.

We tell ourselves we’ll have “more control this year.”

I didn’t.

In this new season of “firsts,” today is the first Thanksgiving without my father. There won’t be a text conversation and phone call this year.

We didn’t have the closest relationship, but there was love there, and because of that, I miss him dearly today.
