The airport rumbles
In the distance,
As the early morning departures
Head elsewhere,
Before the sky
Is fully blue,
The horizon still
Grey and shapeless,
And sunrise
Not quite a reality.
The western sky
Wears night's thin silky sheets,
While the east
Tiptoes
Naked and pink,
Coyly
Out of its bed.

The shape
Of your breast
And the curve
Of your hips,
The way your hair
Would curl
And cling
To your neck
In the humidity
We created
Together,
In a tangle
Of limbs and sheets,
Holding
The world and reality
At bay
In our breathless
Sanctuary.

Chat on the sidewalk,
Their dogs
Sniffing each other
In circles,
Twisting their leashes
Into a long braid.
The sun
Takes its time
To climb
Over the tops
Of the apartment buildings,
The long shadows
Holding onto
Night's chilly embrace.
Distant freeway sounds
Echo softly
Through the concrete canyons,
Mixing with the roar
Of Friday morning
Airport departures.

At twenty,
When immortality
Courses through veins,
As the smoke
Enters your lungs,
And the music Is louder,
And the future
Is simultaneously

And too far away
To lose sleep over,
And the line
Between night and morning
Arrives with the sunrise
Because sleeping
Is for the dead.

At the edge of my bed,
Letting my bare feet
Acclimate
To the cold floor,
I inventory
The aches
Before standing up,
Making mental notes
Of anything new
That didn't hurt
When I crawled
Into bed.
Time
And miscalculations
Have crept
Into my bones,
Whether broken or not,
Accompanied
By increasingly stronger
Reading glasses.

For now,
The drenching respite
From cracking dryness
Still seeping in
To patient roots
And brown grasses.
Within a few days,
Fresh chutes of green
Will begin to emerge,
Sprinting
Toward the sky.
The unfaithful
Rainy season,
Promiscuous and wandering,
Has begun again,
With promises
To return again -
The need is high,
But faith is shaky.

I woke up
Without you.
That side of the bed
Remains empty,
Aside from the dog,
And the occasional pile of laundry
I've left waiting
For the energy
To deal with.
My hand
Still wanders
Into "your" space,
Hoping
You'll be there
Again, sleeping
On your side,
Breathing softly,
The blankets
Pulled up to your nose.

I halfheartedly made the bed
As I got up,
Straightening the pillows
And pulling the blanket and sheet up,
Just enough
To resemble tidy,
While the not-a-lap-dog
Slept stubbornly,
Still claiming the space
My legs were forced to abandon.
By the time
My teeth were brushed,
She had excavated
Her way back
Under the blanket,
Snoring,
With her greying muzzle
Resting comfortably
On my pillow.

Wondering
About the passage
Of time and grey hair,
Without
A "you"
To need me or feed me,
Or lock the door.
Sixty-four
Was once
A distant journey,
But grows visible
On the horizon,
As the sun dips

And winter approaches.
