John and Ann Curley Chair in First Amendment @ Penn State. Loves: Cardinals baseball, shelter dogs, solo travel. Hates: Oxford commas, two spaces after a period. Former Middle East expat. Texas refugee. Recovering journalist. Not your attorney.
Like you, I've heard people rave about Gemini Deep Research, but I have been loathe to try it based on just how terrible Google's AI summaries are.

Perplexity gave me this in under 20 seconds. I use it regularly for low-stakes things, but I'll keep doing the research all by myself.

Have I mentioned I have the best job?

Starting off my day talking to high school journalists here in Nashville at the JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention.

First of four sessions on law, ethics and technology that I'm leading over the next few days!

Found this heartbreaking note on the snack board outside my office at Penn State. @johnfetterman.com, I hope you feel like crap for selling Pennsylvanians like this person out for absolutely nothing. Because that's what Democrats got: nothing but a meaningless promise about healthcare.

Career Goal Achieved: When your name is actually listed in the @merriam-webster.com dictionary entry for freedom of the press!

H/T: @josh.splc.org for making my month by sharing!

Just wrapped up my first trip to Yale. Gorgeous campus and great conversation with folks at the Access and Accountability conference. I'm definitely looking forward to my next trip to New Haven—I still need to try apizza!

Ladies and gentlemen, my former employer...

You might recall the president had state police violently arrest dozens of students whom the prosecutor never charged but UT sanctioned them anyway for exercising their free speech rights.

A real First Amendment utopia.

This is absolutely gut-wrenching. It also appears to be unlawful given the process that's supposed to be undertaken...

When you're so committed to your extreme partisan ideology that you SCREAM the quiet part out loud...

My leftist ideology includes teaching my students about separation of power, checks and balances, civil rights and other core tenets of democratic governance.

Thankfully, I'm no longer in Texas.

Going into the weekend full of fresh ideas from @davidfolkenflik.bsky.social, @randersenjones.bsky.social, @erincarroll.bsky.social, @sonjawest.bsky.social about freedom of the press and the Fourth Estate after getting the opportunity to speak @connlrev.bsky.social's annual symposium today.

Nothing like an extra-nerdy, interactive news graphic in the morning to get me going...

Reuters does an exceptional job illustrating the Nobel Prizes, while perhaps unintentionally making a very interesting commentary on gender equality in our world.

Timely panel on government employee speech that all my academic colleagues at public universities should attend in light of recent reprimands, firings and removals of faculty for comments about Charlie Kirk's murder and more. georgiafirstamendmentfoundation18.wildapricot.org/event-6368238

Great conversation about the criminalization of journalism at the Global Forum for Free Speech at Vanderbilt.

9/11 War on Terror started the path toward designating journalists as the enemy of the people.

You missed the best part of the story... BoR Chair comes out to give UT President and Provost cover when they sell their souls to Trump by signing on the dotted line.

Food for thought on First Amendment Day...

"The First Amendment is often inconvenient. But that is beside the point. Inconvenience does not absolve the government of its obligation to tolerate speech."

This is the first monetary sanction I've seen for undisclosed use of AI in court filings, but I'm curious what others have seen.

I'm also collecting examples of disciplinary action to share with students as well.

32 Chunk aside, my money's on 128 Grazer.

We girls gotta stick together.

If profiles on the dating apps were as amazing as Fat Bear Week profiles, I'd be far more interested in dating...

32 Chunk sounds like a keeper, if you ask me.

My 5 Minutes of Canadian Fame!

When your friend in Qatar gets a text from her daughter in Canada saying that the daughter's boyfriend heard a familiar voice on a CBC video he was watching and it turns out to be you!

So excited that I'm getting to nerd out with the coolest media law attorneys in the country this week.

Yesterday, I got to co-facilitate a session on FOIA that included a discussion of all the latest AI updates, how DOGE cuts hit hard, trends in public records requests and more.

My heart breaks for my friends and loved ones in Qatar living through this unprovoked nightmare. I drove this stretch of road almost daily when I lived in Doha.

Israel's attack violates numerous international laws, but Netanyahu isn't ever held accountable.
