The contemporary conservative mindset is that economic hardships (can't afford rent or groceries) are moral failings no one can help you with but social hardships (no friends, scared of people who are different) are everyone else's problems and must be solved at all costs, even by force if necessary

Professors, many of whom are gig workers and offered very little protections, don’t make these decisions or have much choice in them. The tenure track job has all but disappeared. it is hard to explain the value of learning poetry to a bunch of kids who don’t care for $30k or less annually.
