#Febchantment day 11

The biggest limitation is that most magic is mundane. Most people can only do one or two very small things, like light a candle with conjured fire or levitate an object the size of their hand. It's rare to have great power, and such magics come with unique consequences.
#Febchantment Day 11

What limitations did you put on your magic system to keep it from becoming too OP? Is power in short supply? Do spells take a physical toll on the body?

Note that this is about magic done RIGHT. Day 13 will be about when magic goes horribly wrong!

#Febchantment day 10

Generally there are no requirements and magic can be performed without any special actions, but there are exceptions. Bellwethr'y, for instance, requires placing hands on a body in order to resurrect it. Healing magics also usually require physical contact.
#Febchantment Day 10

How is magic actually performed? What kinds of speech or actions are needed to execute a successful spell? An ancient incantation? A hand sign? Martial arts movements?

Or is it enough simply for the caster to THINK their spell into existence?

Back to Sacred Bell for a short, fun scene where Keria meets a man who will help her reach the city. I wrote this yesterday, so this was good timing!

#Febchantment day 9

No tools are required to use magic, but some kinds of magic need a focus object in order to have any kind of affect. For instance, a user with plant-based magic can't do anything if there are no plants around (unless their magic allows them to grow plants out of nothing).
#Febchantment Day 9

Let's talk magical tools! What does someone need to do magic in your system? An arcane focus (e.g. wand, staff, orb)? A book of spells? A musical instrument? A bunch of obscure ingredients?

If you have magical companions, they would count here 😁

Depends on what era of Fife's history we're in. Early on, the origin of magic is a complete mystery, leading to any number of theories. Later, Fifeans will learn that their magic is the result of an accident during experiments Pure Magic Beings were conducting in another land.
#Febchantment Day 8

This week we're digging more into the nuts & bolts of your magic system! So let's start with the source.

Where exactly does magic "come from" in your world? Where/when does it originate? Does anyone know for sure, or are there only theories?

#WIPSnips redeem

Going with ✨vibes✨ for today's mildly spoilery snippet. In this scene, the protagonist and the other youngs have learned something that redeems the actions of the growns, which until now have seemed needlessly cruel.

#Febchantment day 7

Both of my favorite scenes showcasing Bellwethr'y are kind of spoilery for my novel Sacred Bell. One is darker in nature, taking place after Keria has been pushed to her limit. The other shows her that her magic can be used for good and sets up the future of Bellwethr'y in Fife.
#Febchantment Day 7

It's Snippet Saturday!

Share a snippet from your story which features a particularly impressive or awe-inspiring use of magic!

If you don't have any scenes written yet, feel free to share ideas for a future scene featuring impressive magic!

No sixes in either if my #WIPs, so have a "one" instead, and some contemplation from the unnamed protagonist of SoS.

#Febchantment day 6

I started developing this world and its magic over 10 years ago, so if there was a specific initial inspiration it's lost to time 😂 However, what I want out of this system is to be able to have fun, so it's a system where anything can happen within the loose boundaries I've set.
#Febchantment Day 6

Tell us about why you developed this magic system! What drew you to the concepts? Why did you choose to make it the way you did? Were you inspired or influenced by any other works?

#Febchantment day 5

Everyone has magic to some degree, but most can only do one or two simple things. It's common to discover your magic by accident. It can be honed through training, but because of the variety of types and power, there are few official ways to study magic; most learn on their own.
#Febchantment Day 5

Tell us about who can wield magic in your world!

Is it available to everyone, or only a special few? Is it a gift you're born with, or a skill you can learn? Is the knowledge gatekept in some way?

Don't forget to read & interact with others! 😁

Back to Signs of Spring! I've actually shared this snippet here before lol. This comes from the beginning of the story. Can you guess the word being described here? 🤔

#Febchangment day 4

Focusing on one specific use of magic since there are so many kinds in Fife.

Bellwethr'y magic allows users (Bells) to resurrect the dead, at the cost of the two being connected for the life of the Bell. Whether this is natural or unnatural magic has been debated for centuries.
#Febchantment Day 4

Vocab time! Tell us about some important terms we need to know to understand your magic system. Obviously, make sure you include the definitions! 😁

As usual, interpret the prompt however makes sense to you! Don't feel limited only to conlang words.

From my novel "Sacred Bell"

Keria has just overhead a conversation between her father (Kal) and the local healer, who admits that he can't do anything more to help Isel, Keria's mother, who is dying.

This book is an absolute 10/10 experience. Did I understand everything that went down? Nope. Did it take me a month to read because of both the pacing (slow but compelling) and the fact that it's a 1200+ page behemoth? Yes. Will it live rent free in my brain for months or years to come? Absolutely.

#Febchantment day 3

Natural magic draws energy from nature (e.g. water magic is fueled by water). It can't do anything that nature itself can't do.

Unnatural magic draws energy from the user, making it riskier by nature. As the name implies, it can be used to do things outside the laws of nature.
#Febchantment Day 3

What is the central concept of your magic system? E.g. Elemental magic? Music magic? Name-based magic? Something else? (Note: this isn't the "source" of magic - that's Day 8!)

If you already answered this previously, feel free to go into more detail!

#Febchantment day 2

Magic in Fife leans soft, but with enough structure to make it easier to write and to help me avoid a "why don't they just magic all their problems away" situation. All magic falls broadly under either natural (elemental) or unnatural (everything else) magic.
#Febchantment Day 2

Do you have a "hard" or "soft" magic system?

In other words, does your magic system have strictly defined rules (think: Brandon Sanderson's books)? Or is it more undefined, mostly vibes/rule of cool (think: Gandalf from LOTR)? Somewhere in between?

#Febchantment day 1

I'm Amaris! I have lots of magic systems but I'll probably mostly focus on the one in Fife (which is part of my larger fantasy world) because it's easily the funnest one, and also the most fleshed out. For now, all I'll say is that Fife did not always have magic.
Welcome to #Febchantment!

This month we're talking magic systems! Whether you're building a new one or yapping about an old one, welcome!

Introduce yourself & your world, including the magic. Keep it brief so you still have plenty to talk about the rest of the month!

My favorite gods I've written are the 13 gods of the Sea Kingdom from my main fantasy world. They were all regular people before magic came to their world and transformed them. I'm planning to write a book of short stories explaining their backstories and a how they adjusted to being gods.
Day 28
Another overlap day for many, I'm sure! Stretching the term 'critter' again, yet can sometimes be valid! The godly, demonic, whichever being may fit here! 👼😈
