The reason why there isn't more in the fossil record is because their bodies often don't survive the length of time it takes for fossilization to occur.

And so we come to the end of #fossilfriday 2024 - how wild is that? I felt like this photo of me with this life-size reconstruction of - Megalania estimated to have grown up to 7 meters including the tail. To put this in perspective, the largest Komodo Dragon males clock in at 3 meters (10 feet)!
