Just gonna save this for future reference……

Since Mizuho-sensei often portrays Shade as not knowing bigger adult words/concepts (due to becoming a fiend as a child, I assume), I didn't think Shade would know the grammatically correct, irregular conjugation of "Rend" -> "Rent." So the incorrect grammar is on purpose here!

JP: これじゃ・・・ (At this rate... / Like this now)
EN: I can't get out...

As I've mentioned before, translators often have to read between the lines. "Like this now" is a bit too vague, so I extrapolated that she meant "Like this now, I won't be able to break free."

ドン引き (to be put off by, to cringe at) is one of those words that can be translated a million ways. Since the ballooned line already uses "disgust," I had to go for the "judging" nuance of the word so the meanings wouldn't double up.

Sometimes we have to adjust non-word sounds in EN. Ibara's laugh is "くはは" (ku ha ha), but we'd have to write it as "Koo ha ha" and that might come off strangely, so we did have to go with a "Neh ha ha" to ensure her laughter was at least still evil and recognizable as hers.

JP: シェイドのバカ!(Shade you idiot!)
EN: Ugh, Shaaade!

Translating "baka/idiot" is always interesting, since "idiot" has a wider use case in Japanese than English does. In this particular context, the point of the word is "chide" Shade for messing up.

MGD ch.18 translation notes!

JP: どっちでもいいけどよ (Either would be fine)
EN: Hey, I'm not judging.

It's important to know where to imply things vs where to not in EN for impact.

Another neat facet of manga TL (for certain pubs): Save things like, Yokohama's Chinatown and places where forcefully TLing things to English would be too weird, EVERYTHING legible is translated.

Did you notice this bit in ch.17?? It might be more legible in print, ha ha...!

The "Make me!" was more like "I don't wanna!" in JP, but given the overall context of their tiny background fight, the sarcastic "make me" (implication being: I won't listen to you + I know you can't make me) felt like pretty good functional equivalence to me.
November 16, 2025 at 5:26 AM
"Not helping, Shade!" is a TL I just personally like. The JP's "Now isn't the time to be saying stuff like that!" and I thought the EN phrase aligned with the intention pretty cleanly there. It's always nice to find EN that captures the whole nuance seemingly effortlessly.
November 16, 2025 at 5:26 AM
Similarly: "Got it!"

The JP's "The thing the girl threw!" But this one was more about what a native EN speaker might say. "Got it" implies the she's catching something falling, and the rest of the nuance was clear from context and visuals.

Random MGD TL thoughts. I'm pretty happy with "Oh! You're a--oh!" The JP's "Oh...! Y-you're a magical girl!" But this wouldn't have fit the best in the bubble. It's fun to use real speech quirks like this to imply meaning.

Lmao friend tried to draw my character mascot from memory… honestly, better than the original leafmob/10

Definitely emailing all my clients ASAP. Mori Kaoru-sensei is one of my "dream" authors to translate. Lemme tell you, I would absolutely LOVE to work on Shirley (if it's re-licensed) or the latest collection of Mori-sensei's oneshots.

It's unlikely, but it can't hurt to ask!

When we first learn about "Ruri Karakusa," his name is written as ルリ唐草 (flipping to "first name + last name" order for our purposes), which is the exact SAME reading as 瑠璃唐草 (rurikarakusa), one of the Japanese names for the flower, Baby Blue Eyes.

Had an interesting chat about Rurihiko's name and how it foreshadows both the fact that he'll be a magical BOY and what kind of flower it will be.

This is probably all pretty clear to JP readers, but sadly not so much to EN ones!

By the way, I'll be translating Stella Must Die ^^
Super excited to be doing my first hard(er)-boiled fantasy. And I was a huge fan of Yasunori Mitsunaga-sensei's Princess Resurrection growing up and then later Naqua-Den, so it's super exciting to get to work on something of his!!
September 9, 2025 at 12:11 AM
Anyway, that's all! I hope you're all super excited to see where the fight with Prella (my stupid NON-CANON translation script-only nickname of the merged version of Prima and Stella) goes!!
August 14, 2025 at 8:46 AM
However, in the next chapter, I was equal parts pleased and relieved to see Mizuho-sensei using a French word HERE!

More literally, she says: "Thank you for the baiser on my shoulder."

I'm really glad my instincts proved to be in line with Prima!!
August 14, 2025 at 8:46 AM
Next! I also really felt like Prima would be the kind of person to use French loan words in English! In the Japanese, her line is actually pretty simple and not French. In times like these, it's about making calculated creative decisions in line with the characterization you set.
August 14, 2025 at 8:46 AM
Additionally, when drafting Prima's dialog for ch.10, I just KNEW she would be the type of character to say "darling" in the villain kinda way if she were talking in English.

So, I tried to add it here and there where it felt right against the Japanese, but not go overboard.
August 14, 2025 at 8:46 AM
So. The outcome. On the left is my final draft before it was sent to my editor, on the right is the simulpub version, post-edit/QA:

What do you think?!!!! And in general, I hope you've been enjoying Prima and Stella as villains so far!!
