The challenge is to convince kids the very pencil they are holding may contain the best words they've ever written. Attitude's everything.

It's Poetry Friday! A visit to a local greengrocery sparked this poem. Something of an ode to fresh produce. Vegetable inspired verse proved very fruitful to this poet.

'The challenge for schools is not only to spark curiosity-it's to sustain it. The real work begins once the initial flame has caught. For curiosity to become a way of working, rather than than a one-off event, it must outlast enthusiasm.'

Let's mindfully teach young writers to be observers of the world in which they find themselves. SHOW young writers how to look about their surroundings with an eye for detail. Writers are observers, thinkers and collectors.

Mavis Had a Little Lamb-The Punk Version

Mavis had a little lamb
Then she ate some cakes
Some Cottage Pie
A jug of milk
And a bag of jelly snakes

The people in the café
All feared she’d explode
But she let out a monster burp
And landed on the road.

Have you noticed that our best moments as tourists frequently occur when we stumble upon something when in pursuit of something else?

The potential of writer’s craft to leap from the page and slap me in the face is something I embrace. Wake up, pay attention the words scream. Whether it’s character description, vivid depiction of a setting, or the way the writer challenges me to think about an issue or event. Always exciting.

Inexperienced student writers deserve teachers who understand the processes of writing and drive that rather than the product. Authenticity must drive writing if engagement is to flourish.

We can spend a fortune on kids toys that have a singular purpose, or we could give them a cardboard box and let their imaginations go wild.

Writers are collectors. Lift the lid on the contents of your writer's notebooks so young writers can learn from a more experienced writer/collector/ observer. #writersnotebook

Every young learner deserves a teacher who is a visible reader and writer. Someone willing to join them in their learning journey. Someone to teach them how these life skills are learned and valued. Someone who like them is a brave and curious learner.

Choice should begin with each writer choosing the writer’s notebook that matches their needs. Writer's notebooks should be as individual as the writers who use them. There is not just one way to use them. Discover what works for you. #write #writersnotebook
