I often think about teaching, is it possible that the thing I do best is also the thing that’s killing me? It’s not the kids- they’re the same since my 1st group in 1994- it’s all the system & societal created issues that weigh you down. Pay- no real raise in 10yrs- is giving me my final push out.

94% of teachers have had to dip into their own pockets to buy school supplies. An estimated 1 in 6 have second jobs during the school year to make ends meet.

The average Wall Street employee got a record $244,700 bonus last year.

Something has gone terribly wrong.

Sadly, despite working 4 jobs & making more extra 💰 than I ever have, we didn’t have enough to travel this summer, so since I can’t visit I figured buying Lego Architectural sets used off eBay & building where I’ve been was a sad, but cheaper compromise. My latest mental health project: Big Ben

3/4 of the way through a brutal gauntlet of a weekend- my days off from my primary job teaching- left school 45 min early & paid a colleague $30 to cover my class so I could DJ a HS Band Banquet Fri nite. Created & hosted a 10 team Robotics Battle Bots Competition @ a local waterpark Sat 10-3pm.

It was touch & go but I survived my “HELL WEEK” I’d been stressed about ever since I saw the week aligning over the last 2 months:
*Mon-Fri- Robotics Tourney daily in each class with a hard deadline of Fri 4:30 pm to declare Top 3 Teams- needed to have 7 matches each period daily to stay on sched

Every Thurs after middle school soccer games I get t/g @ a local pizza place for pies & pints w/ fellow coaches & teaching colleagues. Even tho I switched schools 2 yrs ago, I’ve maintained this tradition every Thurs in April/May. I cannot express what these experiences mean to motivate & sustain me

Watching all that’s going down with the Dept of Ed & the teacher in ID, it’s hard not to feel under attack as a teacher. MY community has always been a BIG supporter of me & my classes, but it’s hard to feel secure in that support given everything happening now…waiting for that other shoe to drop…

This is an excellent question…
So uh... how exactly is America going to host the World Cup next year with all these travel and immigration restrictions?

As a teacher w/ 3 side jobs just to keep my family of 5 afloat, I can’t tell you how much I appreciate small rural communities who go above & beyond for me when I DJ for them. Folks in the sticks sometimes get a bum rap- but in my experience they are the kindest, most generous & genuine folks around

They say it’s the hope that kills you…..& I have a bunch of relatives that live in MN that feel & express that frustration with the Vikes every year. Although I never lived in MN, for me that hope & heartache is what made me chose to follow & cheer for them. Arif captures both sentiments well here.

@vikings.bsky.social Just burn the boats….Sam AWOL, Hutchinson off, Jefferson off, kicker off, & O is awful. The D showed up for 3 quarters & played their butts off.
No excuse guys.
I thought this year was different.
Another week to bounce back, & I still have hope- but doing it the hard way now.

Looking back on this year & def a mixed bag. Sad that teachers in TX haven’t had a raise since ‘19 & the loss of pay has forced me to take on a 4th job refereeing soccer- already DJ & work clock/book at athletic events- but fortunate I get to do jobs I love doing, do well, & that make a difference!🥹

Great breakdown for both sides and really keys into how this game evolved and reached its conclusion. Wonderful analysis!

Wow. This really speaks to me. Reading this at a great point of doubt- numerous ones daily- in my life.
I’ve always felt that self-doubt and never thinking I arrived or was good enough was a driving force for me & a source of strength.
Never thought about why others always seemed more self-aasured.

I did a car thing all by myself! Finally working on getting the ‘86 300ZX back as my regular Friday driver. Has been a weekly drive for last 3 yrs, but got a million alert lights & lost AC in May & when my primary vehicle went down as well, I had to put Z repairs on hold- apparently minivan > Z 🤷🏻

Started the day running clock for boys BBall 7th Grade Tourney, then drove an hr away to ref soccer games in the pouring rain- 2 games in before my final 2 were cancelled. Used the extra time to replace wheels on 2 carts with full swivel caster wheels to give our FLL Robotics Teams another table!

There is no better example of a day in the life of a teacher than staying afterschool to work the clock @ 3 8th grade BBall games then going back to your room to switch out 3D print jobs, then going back at 11 pm to switch out more 3D print jobs- 7am-9pm & 11-12:30am day. Only for the ❤️ of the game.

Welp, I was not a good @vikings.bsky.social fan today. I had this game down as a loss since the 1st quarter. Been hurt too many times- but this team is just different- shown it repeatedly this year. Maybe time for me to stop doubting & keep believing. I’m ready to be hurt again. Skol Vikes!

When one spends the second to last day of a weeklong break grading papers for 6 hrs, putting together 3 carts for class, dropping off said carts at school & grocery shopping for the family o 5 for the week ahead, a dip in the hot tub before a late dinner seems an appropriate conclusion…

A pre-Thanksgiving pasta night at my wife’s family’s lake compound. My MIL & her siblings own 7 properties connected around this small lake in west TX & having time to share w/ family in the Fall chill around a fire w/ good food, drinks & family is the stuff life is made of folks. Making memories.

Great game ultimately for the Vikings- maybe not the curb stomping we all hoped for- but in Soldier Field especially, a dub is a dub.
Wonderful write up here highlighting all the individual performances that led to a gritty win & shortcomings that made it unnecessarily close at the end.
