At what cost?

The EU border agency @frontex.bsky.social reports a 26% decrease in irregular border crossings last year.

These numbers say nothing about the human suffering behind the EU’s shift from asylum to deterrence🧵
📢 In 2025, the number of irregular border crossings to the EU dropped by 26% to 178 000, the lowest since 2021
📉 Western African route saw the biggest drop (-63%)
⚠️ Central Mediterranean was the busiest route, accounting for 37% of all arrivals

In 2025, over 27,000 people were intercepted and returned to Libya, where arbitrary detention, exploitation, and violence are the norm.

‼️Instead of taking responsibility for its role in the abuses against people on the move, the EU is doubling down on its support to the Libyan authorities.

We call on EU Member States to end all forms of involvement in interceptions and returns of people to Libya, which is not considered a place of safety under international law. This includes refraining from actions that facilitate interceptions by Libyan authorities.

ATTENTION: While the EU doesn't recognize the Haftar-Regime, it expands its pullback system to Benghazi in East Libya. The EU pays €3 million from the “European Peace Facility” to militia leaders accused of war crimes to abduct and abuse people trying to cross the sea.

For victims, cooperation determines whether access to justice is real or out of reach:

❗ The Situation in Libya in 2025 became a key test for cooperation with the International Criminal Court.

In a new piece co-authored with @lcw.ngo, we unpack what cooperation with the ICC means in practice, and what the human cost is when states fall short.

My concern for Venezuela is rooted in watching Libya for the past decade.

Neither Maduro nor Gaddafi were good for their people and nations.

Yet, seeing what followed the fall of Gaddafi fills me with concern for the future of Venezuela.

There are ways to build peace, this ain’t it.
It’s exhausting and boring, but because the wilful misunderstanders will be out in force some of us are going to have to spend a lot of time saying:

No, we do not like or support Maduro.

We like and support the rule of law.
Maduro is a brutal and oppressive dictator of Venezuela.

Trump has no legitimate legal basis for military action against Venezuela under United States or international law.

Both of those facts are simultaneously true.

It’s worth mentioning that this also comes after a year of the U.S. gutting support for the UN, sanctioning ICC judges, withdrawing from international agreements, collapsing international aid by breaking down USAID, and damaging any work for peace i.e. through USIP.
Colombian president Gustavo Petro has requested urgent meetings in the UN and the Organization of American States (OAS) - only question is to what extent these multilatreal organizations even matter in a world where the US has shown no regard for the rules based international order.

1/2 When "cooperation" becomes complicity.
While people are intercepted at sea and sent back to the hell of Libyan detention, @UNmigration talks about "joint action"and “safe, orderly migration.”
From 7–13 Dec 2025: 564 people intercepted to torture, extortion, abuse.
All documented.
