I'd say it was desegregation. MAGA bitterly resented the loss of separate but equal. Their activism took on new urgency; crucially they shifted their influence from outside to inside places of power. The culture wars, religious liberties were tools to undermine liberal democracy.

After Nov 2016, I decided I don't give a lick what non-christians do, they're entitled to their own morality as long as it's legal; christians otoh, we don't have such a right.
