Why is it important to include references to slavery on blue plaques, National Trust properties, etc? Because otherwise people are convinced that somehow those lovely houses were gifted to certain British families by the fairies, and don't think about where the money came from.
holy shit: “Among the 2,000 UK adults surveyed, 85% were unaware that Britain forcibly transported more than 3 million Africans to the Caribbean, 89% did not know that Britain enslaved people in the Caribbean for more than 300 years” www.theguardian.com/world/2025/n...

Book 81/52 for 2025: The House of Binding Thorns (Dominion of the Fallen #2) by Aliette de Bodard. It took a bit for me to get into this one but I was also recovering from surgery when I started it so that might have been a cognitive issue. By halfway through I was absolutely riveted! 1/2

Moderate politics which involve confiscating jewelry from the poorest and most vulnerable.
Honestly at this stage there is no difference between Labour and the far right.
Your regular reminder that there is absolutely nothing "hard" or "tough" about targeting the poorest, most vulnerable, and least able to defend themselves groups of people on the entire planet

Controversial opinion but maybe allowing people to work in order to pay for an asylum claim?
(it wouldn't seem as punitive, I know. This isn't about financing the asylum scheme, it's about being seen as tough on asylum. Blech)
OMG what the hell.
This is just cruel
Jewelry often has a value beyond the practical, it's often a reminder of loved ones.
Could this timeline be a little less reminiscent of 1930ies Germany?
The Sun has been told Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will on Monday propose confiscating jewellery, watches, necklaces from asylum seekers to meet asylum costs

This reflects the most controversial aspect of the Danish scheme - the Jewellery Law. The toughest Labour MPs thought this was OTT

Wow
(not surprised, alas. The French state has a history of not paying on time due to admin delays)
