Long day. Got back to the hotel about 6.30. Done a bunch of edits for another client. Gonna grab a shower and head out for something to eat. My eyes are buggered. No more cameras or screens. Between -18 and -21C in the wind chill for most of the day. Time for hot sake, beer, meat and bed.

The exposure on this video is about twice as dark as it is outside on the freeway. Whiteout most of the way to Yoichi so far. Hard to get it across in a video. Visibility about 10m in places.

Good morning from Sapporo. On our way up to Yoichi now. Filming scenes there today. Which I’m sure will be great but chilly. As it’s a port.

Will report in as and when feasible.

Have a great day, everyone.

I didn’t have the audio level high enough. But I hope you can enjoy the lovely snow and jazz. Sapporo. Always love coming here.

Sapporo. Just a couple of minutes to the hotel. What a mad, 5hr adventure that drive from Esashi was. Looking forward to a bowl of something hot to eat and then a nice soak in the bath. Bravo to our driver. What a hero.

Millennium Hiace to Sapporo. Just made the jump to light speed. Ha.
January 13, 2026 at 11:32 AM
About 80kms from Sapporo now. Past Lake Toya and down towards Rusutsu. Quite the adventure so far. In these conditions, a drive of 300kms is something of an undertaking.

Finished filming in Esashi. We’re due to take a plane from Hakodate to Sapporo but all the flights are grounded due to bad weather. So the driver who’s been with us the last two days is driving us to Sapporo. Crazy windy and snowy here in Esashi. Not surprised the flights are off.

Good morning from Hakodate. Breakfasted and already on our way back to Eisashi, to begin the days filming.

Photo from outside the hotel in Hakodate.

Have a great day, everyone.

Went for a 20min walk around the neighbourhood here in Hakodate. Lovely, fresh air. Actual temp of -3C with a “feels like” of -11C. But a lovely walk. Perfectly setup for a nice bath and a good sleep.

In the hotel in Hakodate. Looking down out of my 11th floor window. Ironically, an establishment called “London Lash” is right across the street. Ha.

Time for a nice bath in the sento downstairs. Then bed.

Heading through Hakodate to our hotel.
January 12, 2026 at 10:03 AM
Was fun shooting in that earlier. -20C with the windchill. Was bitterly cold in the wind. All done filming for the day and not far from the hotel in Hakodate now.

Grabbing a bento at the airport conbini. Not surprised we were delayed. Still pretty windy here.
January 12, 2026 at 3:51 AM
We made it. One hour late but happy to be down.
January 12, 2026 at 3:28 AM
Pilot not sure yet if we’ll be able to land at Hakodate. Snow conditions there pretty bad, it seems. Seems he’s keen to give it a go. But we may divert to New Chitose or, worst case, return to Tokyo. Will know soon.

Whatever works.

I’m just the presenter. Not the producer.

No stress. Yay.
👍😀

Starting the day on a high. Taxi driver taking me to the airport said of my Japanese pronunciation that “If I just listen and don’t look in my mirror to see you’re a foreigner, I’d think you were a local.”

Yay.

Everything sorted for next week. Final thing was to go to the 7-11 and print out my script. Chilling for a bit now before having a nice hot bath and hitting the sack. Next “hello” will likely be from Hokkaido, tomorrow morning. If all goes to plan.

Living in Japan escalated and deepened my interest in tectonics, earthquakes and volcanology. This is a fascinating little documentary.

An important car in the history of Subaru, the front-wheel-drive 1000 was the company's first step out of the small kei-car bracket. Launched in 1966, it was a model which could compete in the heart of the Japanese market and also appeal to overseas customers. #weirdcarbs

Good morning from a grey and windy Tokyo. Photo from, hmm, well over ten years ago. This bridge in our neighbourhood is long gone. But this night in particular it looked wonderful.

Getting into snow mode. Off on assignment tomorrow (or Tuesday) to Hokkaido for a week.

Have a great day

Happy Birthday, Eddie. A blast from the past in my youth. And if there’s ever a biopic, Joe Keery from Stranger Things would be a good fit for a young Cheever.
Happy Birthday to 9-time F1 podium finisher Eddie Cheever, 68 today.

Cheever started 132 Grand Prix between 1978-1989, finishing 2nd at the 1982 Detroit & 1983 Canadian Grand Prix. After F1, he raced in CART, & the IRL, winning the 1998 Indianapolis 500.
