Finally got around to reading this and this particular section explains a lot about where the whole schism came from. The core problem of when you collectively vote for a person to do a thing but that person votes against it.

I'm taking this headline literally and assuming that all EU states must recognise gay marriage in an explicitly Poland-rebuking way.

Of course this is the reason. Not even some nefarious plan, just the fact that Trump can't mentally hold two different plans in his head at the same time so he wants one all-purpose one for both Ukraine and Palestine.
