I teach critical reading/writing in first-year composition and this is a super common and surprisingly difficult-to-fix mistake. I think it's a problem with separating an "is" explanation from a "should be" argument.

Oh I think it can be very persuasive. As someone who teaches writing, I think his point is that persuasion absent evidence is manipulation, not argumentation. I took his point to be that an argument can be compelling and also BS at the same time.

Yes! Should be applied to other issues as well. Good-faith efforts of all kinds are too often getting blamed for the very existence of bad-faith liars and cons.
