Nietzsche on the passions and self-cultivation: contra the Stoics and Spinoza

16. Stoic teaching makes a distinction between “good affections” (eupatheiai) and “passions” (pathe), with the latter being construed as disordered affective states that do not participate in virtue. For further insight see Russell (2012: pp. 184–88). See also the study by Graver (2007). With regards to the “exceptions” I mention above, one might refer to thinkers such as Malebranche, Hume, and Rousseau. Hume is famous for his claim that reason acting on its own can make nothing matter: “Tis not contrary to Reason to prefer the destruction of the entire world to the scratching of my finger,” Hume (2007, 2.3.3). For Hume reason is the power we have to make discoveries about what is real, and so is to be immensely valued. His critical point though, when he reflects on the relation between reason and the passions, is to insist that reasoning alone can never give us a primary impulse to do anything or to make moral judgements. Reason enables us to discover what is true or false about reality, but it cannot provide us with any motivating desire to act. In itself reason is impotent. Malebranche takes the Stoics to task on the emotions in his extensive treatment of the passions in The Search After Truth (1997, book five, chapter two). Rousseau accords a crucial role to the passions in human education and holds that the “one who has lived most is not he who has counted the most years but he who has most felt life!” Rousseau (2010: p. 7).

1. All passions have a phase when they are merely disastrous, when they drag down their victim with the weight of stupidity — and a later, very much later phase when they wed the spirit, when they “spiritualize” themselves. Formerly, in view of the element of stupidity in passion, war was declared on passion itself, its destruction was plotted; all the old moral monsters are agreed on this: il faut tuer les passions. The most famous formula for this is to be found in the New Testament, in that Sermon on the Mount, where, incidentally, things are by no means looked at from a height. There it is said, for example, with particular reference to sexuality: “If thy eye offend thee, pluck it out.” Fortunately, no Christian acts in accordance with this precept. Destroying the passions and cravings, merely as a preventive measure against their stupidity and the unpleasant consequences of this stupidity — today this itself strikes us as merely another acute form of stupidity. We no longer admire dentists who “pluck out” teeth so that they will not hurt any more.

To be fair, it should be admitted, however, that on the ground out of which Christianity grew, the concept of the “spiritualization of passion” could never have been formed. After all, the first church, as is well known, fought against the “intelligent” in favor of the “poor in spirit.” How could one expect from it an intelligent war against passion? The church fights passion with excision in every sense: its practice, its “cure,” is castratism. It never asks: “How can one spiritualize, beautify, deify a craving?” It has at all times laid the stress of discipline on extirpation (of sensuality, of pride, of the lust to rule, of avarice, of vengefulness). But an attack on the roots of passion means an attack on the roots of life: the practice of the church is hostile to life.

Wondering if anybody found a lead.

This discussion of the solar-pantheistic deity who rules over fire and metals concludes with an invocation linking the subject with the next to follow. Its highly syncretic approach to the ancient gods is not surprising in a text of similar date to the Papyri. The cryptic gematria in the closing line represents the value of the Greek letters IHΣ, a mystic formula representing Dionysus:

Przybyszewski feels differently. He believes that no man should possess another human being, and has even offered the key of his apartment to Strindberg, so that he may avail humself of Przybyszewski's common-in-law wife. Strindberg has declined. Przybyszewski tells Munch that he believes sex to be life's basic substance, and the inner essence of individuality. The ever-creating, the transforming, and the destructive. What is an AI Growth Zone?

According to the government, AI Growth Zones are designated sites that are well-suited to housing AI-enabled datacentres and their supporting infrastructure. Ideally, these zones should have “enhanced access” to power supplies of at least 500MW and sympathetic planning support. This is because datacentres are notoriously power-hungry entities, and siting them in areas where energy is in short-supply could slow down the time it takes to bring one of these new AI server farms online.

It strikes me that what Saint-Fond espouses here is like a parody of both Sethian Gnosticism and mainline Christianity, tempted to assume there's a sort of "satanic" tint to it (if the implication is that the supreme being/God must be Satan), furnished with a kind of Epicurean atomic materialism.
