An opinionated Edinburger mainly interested in the outdoors, science and politics.
Currently raging against the dying of the light.
If you get your news from the BBC it's easy to miss.
...along with the government lifting 450 children out of poverty and increases to the minimum wage, etc..

Thanks.
I note they assume that migrants pay the same tax as the average Briton but aren't able to get welfare of any kind. It does seem a bit finger in the air and I note their caveat.

England only I think. Certainly Scotland is already introducing one along the same lines but looking at the attached spending restrictions it seems hard to imagine councils building new schools or affordable homes with the income.
November 25, 2025 at 5:38 PM
In Scotland the government does seem to interfere in how the tax revenue will be used.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if they cut the council's central funding as well so we end up no better off but perhaps I'm being overly cynical.

Yes, this sort of blatant protectionism and self interest is one of the reasons I'm 6/10 in favour of the EU.

Harding is well qualified. How she got those jobs may be open to debate but she does seem to be a competent manager.
.. you're aware the cost you quoted was a budgetary figure and was mainly composed of the cost of testing?

Wooden leg?
November 20, 2025 at 8:46 PM
I guess it could come in useful.
November 20, 2025 at 5:33 PM
Ah yes, Breugel. The elder did do one painting where someone had 3 legs.

Electricity is completely CO2 free in the highlands this evening and 99% CO2 free in the rest of Scotland.

Well some do and some don't.
If I make a vegetable curry, have I made an ultra processed food and is it bad for me and if so why?
November 19, 2025 at 4:27 PM
Hey! I'm on one of their lists too! It's a small world.
November 17, 2025 at 4:11 PM
...and neither is yours.
I did live round the corner for 17 years so I had plenty of time to appreciate its vileness. A building that sucked the humanity from the old town.
While some modernist buildings are wonderful, most aren't and sniffily defending them is just Jazz club architecture.

They thought they might have to but now things have changed and they don't. Would you rather they ploughed on and raised income tax anyway? To look strong?
November 14, 2025 at 7:15 PM
Chaos?

Eight you say?

Hi Andras,

Why don't you go first and tell us which measures you consider to be are unreasonable and why?
I've copied them below for ease of reference.

It's not panic but don't let that stop you talking bollocks.
November 14, 2025 at 12:59 PM
Numbers always need context otherwise people misinterpret them.

It's only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured in Edinburgh as a result of a collision around one of these things. There have been two collisions at the chicane by the Longstone bus garage to my knowledge as well.
Is the council interested?

I don't see much wrong with what he's saying. Driving round my city I see plenty of cyclists ignoring the highway code, seemingly in the belief that they're invulnerable.
If you cycle without lights at night don't be surprised if someone else hits you.
November 9, 2025 at 4:07 PM
Sorry but I don't see much wrong with the final option. More than half of employees would see no imposition of tax.
November 8, 2025 at 11:59 AM
Well, he thinks half the ISA should go into UK stocks. I'd say 1/3 given that the returns on the UK stock market aren't brilliant.
