We did buy a pipeline because we felt there was a need to still get Alberta's oil to market. That's not an excuse, but it was seen as a way to keep Alberta on side with the climate plan. And what did we get? We just got a super expensive pipeline, completely over budget being paid for by Canadian taxpayers. We have oil and gas companies in Alberta under a new government that's gone back on all of the regulations, and is fighting all of the regulations that were agreed to as part of this idea of moving ahead on a pipeline. We have oil and gas companies that committed to net zero and then took their massive record, historic profits and gave them back in massive bonuses to their CEOs and executives, and through share buybacks largely to Americans. So here we are again. They did not live up to their end of the bargain under any stretch of the imagination. I would never trust them. All alt text in previous pic

There's a lot of things you can criticize western journalism for, but I'm not sure "remembering this guy had a journalist murdered and started a war" is one of them

The Tŝilhqot’in Nation, with a court declaration of Aboriginal title, has never targeted private property and has no intention of doing so. Private lands were excluded from the declaration of title that the Nation sought — and received — from the Supreme Court of Canada. Recently, the Haida Nation consented to the continuation of private land interests as part of its title recognition agreement with BC and Canada. The Cowichan Nation has also taken care to ensure that the declaration of Aboriginal title it secured in its recent judgment does not interfere with the rights of private owners.

I feel like this whole “see something say something” movement is essentially a guise or a “bait and switch” to artificially bump up the number of service calls, just so the City would be able to justify adding more RCMP officers to our city (or at least to justify the amount of overtime being paid). 🤔

This is an interesting one, too. There's been talk of having the military take a larger role on responding to climate disaster; instead this calls for essentially a civil corps (led by youth) to serve that role
Advancing the Youth Climate Corps Investing in paid green skills training and job placements positions Canada to be competitive by equipping the workforce needed to build a climate competitive economy. Budget 2025 proposes to provide $40 million over two years, starting in 2026-27, to Employment and Social Development Canada, to create a Youth Climate Corps to provide paid skills training for young Canadians. They will be trained to quickly respond to climate emergencies, support recovery, and strengthen resilience in communities across the country. The skills training and work experience opportunities created through a Youth Climate Corps support reducing youth unemployment, increasing innovation, and strengthening adaptation and mitigation projects.

Was not expecting a funding boost for CBC/Radio-Canada in an austerity budget, and was really not expecting Eurovision to be a key part of that

(the $150M is a one-time thing according to the tables, not ongoing)

Why Sir John A. Macdonald refused free trade with the U.S. When in 1878 we were called upon to administer the affairs of the Dominion, Canada occupied a position in the eyes of the world very different from that which she enjoys today. At that time, a profound depression hung like a pall over the whole country, from the Atlantic Ocean to the western limits of the province of Ontario, beyond which to the Rocky Mountains stretched a vast and almost unknown wilderness. Trade was depressed, manufactures languished and, exposed to ruinous competition, Canadians were fast sinking into the position of being mere hewers of wood and drawers of water for the great nation dwelling to the south of us. We determined to change this unhappy state of things. We felt that Canada, with its agricultural resources, rich in its fisheries, timber, and mineral wealth, was worthy of a nobler position than that of being a slaughter market for the United States. We said to the Americans, “We are perfectly willing to trade with you on equal terms. We are desirous of having a fair reciprocity treaty; but we will not consent to open our markets to you while yours remain closed to us.”

You do, in fact, have to hand it to Terry Glavin and Andrew Coyne for not giving into the hype that seems to have gripped every other columnist on this topic

Not coincidentally they are the ones who actually noticed the court ruling, not just the Richmond mayor's viral letter on X 2 months later

It is worth noting that Rustad held the portfolio of Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation for four years, a significant length of time for any cabinet role. Accepting such a position is more than a political appointment; it is a commitment to uphold the Crown’s constitutional obligations and advance reconciliation. When someone who once accepted that responsibility chooses to misrepresent the law and undermine the principles they were entrusted to advance, it calls into question their credibility as a leader. Having grown up in the North, and with a family that has benefited from the opportunities this region provides, he should recognize that the region’s future depends on lawful, respectful relationships, not rhetoric that divides and misleads. As the elected representative for a riding where nearly one in five residents is Indigenous, Rustad’s repeated mischaracterization of the law and calls to halt negotiations are deeply concerning.

These senators are demonstrating a wilful blindness that has become endemic in the Democratic Party. Their rhetoric — and the conventional wisdom that flows from it — suggests that we cannot talk about economic solutions without abandoning our commitment to the Black, Latino, gay, transgender and female poor that are the lifeblood of the Democratic Party’s base. The conceit at the heart of that belief is that poor white people are too racist, and too uniquely ignorant of their racism, to vote in their best interests. Therefore, Democrats have to accept a little racism to win the working class.
