I had a medical procedure done today on my knee and was realizing we didn’t have an ice pack, and then realized: it’s Ottawa! The sky has been making ice pack filling all day!

I spent entirely too much this weekend but I now own winter boots that I can wear with a suit and which won’t make my ankle/knee/hip issues worse, so points to me I guess.

My friend Patti Lenard and I are researching LGBTQ+ private refugee sponsorship in Canada, & are looking to interview LGBTQ+ newcomers who arrived in Canada through private sponsorship and people who have served as sponsors. If you or someone you know is interested, please have them reach out!

Today in unschooling, my daughter and I just calculated the approximate number of nanoseconds since the creation of the earth: two septillion, three hundred sixty-six sextillion, eight hundred twenty quintillion. So that was fun.

15 years ago, as a Pennsylvanian who has been living in NYC for 6 yrs, I wanted to make sure that Andrew Cuomo didn’t need my vote so I could vote for a candidate I didn’t hate. Very different scenario but let me pass the reassurance on: current NYCers, you don’t have to vote for Cuomo. #votemamdani

Feels fitting to be riding the Nathan Cirillo train today, the 11th anniversary of his death while on sentry duty at the War Memorial. May our future hold less violence than our past.

Small collection of Gaza related graffiti in Rome. There’s also been a demonstration and/or general strike every day, which as a tourist is annoying (so hard to get a darn cab) but as someone who studies social movements is impressive as hell.

Guess who forgot the Alps existed until she was in them?

Floof says trans rights.

If you see this skeet, you have to name a trans book more people should read.

This is convenient - I just finished Notes from a Regicide by Isaac Fellman last night, and it’s a banger, about art and revolution and mental illness and embodiment.

I Tried The McVeggie So You Don’t Have To: I was surprised to see this on the McDonalds app when my teen wanted delivery today, so tried it out. Verdict: edible, I will probably order it again. Mixed veg patty rather than Beyond style, which I prefer. But I still like Harvey’s better (bc pickles).

Today's emergency alert test at my desk at work had a soundtrack.

My eighteen year old kitten is very sweet to her people but she is very much living on “fuck this and fuck you” energy. (Sitting behind her boy while he does his homework.)

Fascinating that the scam texts think this is a question that would drive high engagement…

By contrast, this is my union the day a conciliation session began; two days later they announced an agreement in principle. My union is fight-y by nature, but you can see the difference in tone.

I'm sorry, is this Italian train schedule calling me a slut?
September 4, 2025 at 7:00 PM
Well this is a new Zoom feature. IDK you guys, should I mark the hours I'm teaching as 'billable'????
September 4, 2025 at 4:54 PM
You know you've made it as a prof when the student association invites you to take a pie to the face for charity. Thanks to Caelin for the invite and Eucharia for being willing to do it on camera. (You can contribute to AÉÉIPPSSA's Shinerama team here: shinerama.crowdchange.ca/112990/team/...)

Today in syllabus prep: turns out my boy Jean-Jacques Rousseau was the first person in recorded history* to think disliking cats was a red flag.

Idk guys, too honest for the syllabus?

I have gotten carsick since always, and I know that salt and sour help with the nausea (and sugar makes it worse). This trip I’ve figured out that Tylenol plus an antacid can actually knock out the head/neck/stomach pain entirely. Meet my new anti-carsickness starter pack.

Hey, we were there too! A pretty good came all considered.

I really do love this scraggly, easily-annoyed, cranky old lady.
