Certainly one of the things that all of the various anti trans groups have in common from the Nazis to the "Gender Criticals" to the Evangelical Christians is their love for controlling other people's lives. Authoritarianism isn't just a political description, it's a thought pattern

I think this is something I've missed when talking about why the far right values attacking trans people so highly. It's not just that it radicalises people and teaches them anti human rights arguments, it's that it literally cultivates authoritarian thinking

I saw polling suggesting 1.7 million AfD voters had transferred from established right-wing parties - the Christian Democrats and the Free Democrats. Treating the rising far right as a purely or mainly poor or working-class phenomenon is dubious in Germany and also in Britain or the US.
One of my best friends is from a sleepy, wealthy small town in the south-west of Germany. He said, so many of my parents’ neighbours are rich and bored, with little to complain about, and they’ve radicalised themselves at dinner parties and online. In their aimlessness, they’ve bonded over hate.
This isn’t some rant saying “Germany has learned nothing from its past” - the reality is more subtle than that. Middle-class Germans live and travel with an incredible amount of ease and comfort, and they just got…sleepy. Many of them dismissed the far-right’s rage as just another set of complaints.
