Casual reminder that the myth of “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps” is a cruel hoax designed to convince poor people from all walks of life that the injustices they face are a result of their own actions, rather than an oppressive system rigged against them.

Such a good point here from @davekarpf.bsky.social: If Dems don't engage forcefully enough on Trump's terror raids, Trump/MAGA propaganda filters down to the "inattentive public" and risks persuading people this is normal and acceptable.

this is something that individual members of Congress could do tomorrow. The government is shut down so they could use their district offices. I suggested in January that they turn those offices into full on community centers where people could find each other re: mutual aid etc...
If I were running the DNC, there would be Democratic Party sponsored food relief banks across the country right now that specifically welcomed anyone regardless of party affiliation.

Along with the food, there could be voter registration and links to runforsomething.net

Great chatting! I hope the number one takeaway is this: this bullshit bill is not yet law, and public pressure in the next 24 hours could kill or at least delay it. If you’ve never called your rep before, make a plan to call tomorrow - especially if you have a GOP rep!
Tonight at 7pm ET I will be interviewing
@ezralevin.bsky.social of @indivisible.org
on my Substack about what this bill means for everyday Americans, how Indivisible is mobilizing nationwide, and how each of us can help turn the tide. Join us!

We are facing a serious threat to democracy, law, and liberty. The abuse of prosecutorial power to intimidate, investigate, and detain political opponents is upon us. It is a constitutional crisis. I will keep speaking out until public outrage overflows. I just hope it’s not too little, too late.

Great piece by Gessen. Names something complicated about the numbing quality of what it’s like to be in all this right now and ultimately reminds us to keep resisting. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/28/o...

Every Memorial Day is painful. I have friends who should be alive right now, not buried in their early 20s with their whole lives in front of them. But this year, it's especially hard to reconcile their extraordinary sacrifice to our country with the unchecked incompetence and corruption of Trump.

Happy pub day to my amazing sister Karen! She wrote a story once for high school English about a society where a face mask machine got stuck and everyone had to wear the same one, the B17. I still remember the mask name! She has always been so original & attuned & inspiring. Big congratulations!!❤️
Pub date for THE WORDS OF DR. L! Tons of gratitude today for those who helped shepherd my newest into the the world; Maria Massie, Dan Smetanka and the fabulous crew at Counterpoint Press. I hope this book can bring some joy and insight and connection to readers in this insane and hard time.

A major part of the ongoing catastrophe of Trump in office is that some political reporters and pundits continue to treat all of this like it's a game. For them, this is fun. They enjoy covering the drama. Their priority is playing into that drama instead of appropriately informing the public.
