I ran a fairly large blog commenting platform in ~2001 and was taken by surprise when performance tanked because some blog entries suddenly had tens of thousands of comments.

Turns out Japanese teenagers were picking a random blog each day and using the comments as a chatroom.

Fun episode! I worked at AWS at the time (DynamoDB Infrastructure). This was a memorable final on call shift. Some say you can still hear the chorus of pagers if you listen close enough.

Be eyes wide open about tipping too: These apps regularly trick consumers into tipping that doesn’t end up in workers pockets.
