I think actual big tech vs up-&-coming tech is an underrated power struggle, macrocosm to Altman vs microsoft.

Add that China is continuing to do ridiculously cost-effective training, & why wouldn't Sam dip into the government's pockets.

I could see a weird dynamic where Altman is wigged over not-good financials & everyone else is wigged because OpenAI taking a hit would be bad for "the vibe" & for them short-term.

But then even msft & certainly others would be glad to soak up researchers & kill the smaller scene, I'd think.

is doing some of the topical not-super-thoughtful critique given that, especially in days of ole when RLHF & reasoning models were new or uncommon, it'd give measurable gains.

Not generally a kneejerk rag on journalists person, but this is the kind of statement that shows not just complete lack of knowledge but that nobody even bothered to consult an undergraduate in the relevant field.
