Heh, a practice Apple was doing even in the 80s. I think the C64 was $150 or less by 1987. Even in 1984, it was $199 at most places. (It launched in 1982 for $595)

Correction, the price is $940.00

You're so lucky the edge connector was in good shape ... your I/O board connector is better looking than my CPU connector even!

I've been telling friends to use Chrome OS Flex (if their PC couldn't run Win 11) and so far all of them have been really happy. (This only works for people who don't use programs specifically, but that seems like a good chunk of regular people now.)

When I'm working on a video and suddenly run into a clip I have to remux, it's a PITA to get the command line right with FFMPEG to fix the file. I know how to do it, but it's a time waste for me. I guess I'll ask AI to make me a script -- I think that's something most people can do now...

Indeed it's an abstraction layer for FFMPEG, but that doesn't mean it couldn't benefit from an easy mode... or just another tool all together where you can just set up a profile once (or use a default. Then drag and drop a video file onto it.

If it took me 15 minutes of screwing around to get that working in a room filled with Linux experts, how would my mother figure that out? Oh a Mac or Windows, it would have just worked.... Those are the issues I'm talking about.

I would say I'm quite a technical person, but even I run into silly issues with my Kubuntu running Thinkpad. My perfect example: I was giving a talk at our local Linux User Group meeting and it took me 15 minutes just to get the presenter view working with the laptop and projector.

This is likely because for 99% of people, computers are simply a tool. Like a car. They learn how to use it, and that's what they know. If you gave someone a car that works in a wildly different way, some people can easily adapt, others, not so much.

For me, modern computers are simply a tool. I know _how_ to dig-in and fiddle, but I don't want to.

So I can understand why my mother (and 99% of people) don't want to learn everything there is to know about video encoding just to convert a file.

For me, when people have a computer that can't run Windows 1, I just tell them to use Chrome OS Flex.

Honestly, most people only ever use the web now for everything, and Chrome OS Flex (which is of course Linux based) kind of rocks. Foolproof, fast, easy, just works, etc.

Plus there is nothing to say you can't have an easy mode and normal/advanced mode.
October 31, 2025 at 7:19 AM
Come on... there is a middle ground. I really don't think the author was implying Handbrake should ONLY have a drag and drop single function. It's that there is no reason it can't have an "Easy Mode."

Apple has shown us users don't mind a locked-down and limited experience with iOS.

I would argue that knowing their work benefits other people is a big factor for many, if not most FOSS and FOSH devs. I work closely with lots OSH devs and they welcome input on making their product easier to use, be less confusing and benefit a broader audience. For them, that's the whole point.

ROTFL!!!!!!!!

I'm glad I live in a state that's been 100% vote by mail since May 1995. This should just be universal across the board!

It seems a universal phenomenon in America. Many people who live outside metro areas are scared they will be harmed if they step foot into an urban area. Then post comments on any story about any crime and talk about the "downfall of the <insert name> city!" and "The <insert name> is a shithole!"

It's a CO2 powered device, that shoots kinetic and/or chemical irritant projectiles. Often called "less lethal" guns. It basically is like hitting someone with pepper spray, but from 20 meters away.

That CRT is so gassy! 💨
October 28, 2025 at 7:08 PM
What blows my mind is there are Americans who think this is totally cool and normal.

That nutritional information is slightly different implying they aren't quite identical. How does the Walmart brand taste? Time for a double blind taste test!
