I only know this play in relation to Orson Welles. As I’m sure you know, the first film he shot was material to be integrated into a stage production of the show, but the inserts were abandoned in the end due to technical difficulties. The surviving footage looks great of course.

It’s Koda’s ‘Gotcha’ Day again, eight years since we brought him home from Battersea Dogs Home. He’s now 11, but ageing gracefully as you see. Also shown posing with an iPad back then, we were trying to show someone how big how he was.

BRIEF ENCOUNTER premiered on this day in 1945. It was directed by David Lean of course, but Noël Coward is, understandably, given prominence. This was their fourth and final collaboration, after IN WHICH WE SERVE, THIS HAPPY BREED and BLITHE SPIRIT.

KNEECAP (2024) Streamed this last night and loved it. It’s the Gaelic hip-hop group’s own story, they play themselves, and is outrageously funny and sharp about Northern Ireland's 'ceasefire generation'. Stylistically, it borrows from TRAINSPOTTING et al, but it has a humour and energy of its own.

My first post. For Remembrance Sunday, here's the great Claude Rains, an upcoming stage actor when he joined up in 1916. An injury to his vocal chords from a severe shell attack in 1917 gave him his distinctive ‘honey with gravel' voice. He stayed in the Army, only resuming his career in 1919.
