She might have said 75-100km ... and the Guardian style is to convert to miles. Still a ridiculously long way for a regular weekend of running!

It's a different culture I think. In Europe the route is often (though not always) from A to B, by whichever route you want - as in fell running etc. In the US it's strictly sticking to trails. Kilian Jornet was once disqualified from a race in the US for cutting corners, but he thought it was fine

Yes, that has definitely happened - usually about three-quarters of the way through. After much heel dragging. Suddenly it all lifts. At least 50 miles in.
