The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle entry for 776 says the Mercians & the people of Kent fought at Otford. It doesn't say who won, but it does tell us: "And marvellous adders were seen in Sussex."

This may be a very stupid question. I dug this up in my garden which is in a very old village in rural Buckinghamshire. Is it just a shoe for a very little horse or do little horse shoes have some other relevance?

After the Battle of Hastings, William the Conqueror's work was not done. He had to subdue the whole of England. It might surprise you to know that the tactics he used are still used by armies today in counterinsurgency campaigns.

After1066 ‘the English groaned aloud for their lost liberty and plotted ceaselessly to find some way of shaking off that which was so intolerable’. For some warriors the solution was to leave the country. Read about English warriors fighting in the Varangian Guard.
