Just visited some hair relics, and I can fairly confidently say they’d usually be kept in reliquaries for partially this reason :)

Went to Topkapı Palace to see some Prophetic relics. An interesting experience. I was surprised to see an arm-shaped reliquary for John the Baptist. I also didn’t know there was a beard hair of Abu Bakr! The mantle and flag of the Prophet didn’t allowed photographs

More relics in Istanbul, this time from the tomb of Abū Ayyūb al-Ansārī. In addition to the Companion’s tomb itself, there are hairs of the Prophet Muhammad, a “leaf from the tree he planted,” and his footprint
