you know i think i like the trope for the reason you dislike it. i like the catharsis of when everything comes to light b/c IRL that never happens (to me at least). ppl tend not to change their mind when more information comes to light or if you try to clear up a misunderstanding they shut down :/

baccano the anime is a very small slice of the series (it's a very good anime tho) so there's no character like that in it... but actually the novels does have an immortal that is locked away and wakes up in like the 1950/1960s 😅
