Hiking in PA this week we came across what looks like attempts to redirect a stream. Logs secured by rebar lined the stream, and this kind of upstream-facing V occurred in a few places. I assume it’s to help direct the water as it drops down?
A small forest stream passes between bank-bolstering logs and two angled together in a V, dropping slightly into a shallow pool before ambling on again. Fallen leaves litter the forest floor. Closer view of the log-based V that points upstream.

A yellow swallowtail butterfly spreads its wings as it enjoys a late morning snack on a pile of horse poop. There’s good stuff in there, and it passed through a beautiful animal… and will pass through another beautiful animal!

So glad to have gotten out for a little hike before the heat settles in.

Fourth of July celebrations from Middlesex, NY, 1915 and thereabouts. One of my great-grandmother's childhood homes is just there 👉

This used to be a soccer field.

#rewilding
A suburban marsh filled with purple loosestrife (?) that used to be a soccer field. Now filled with the sounds of frogs and marsh birds on this bright, sunny, blue-sky July 4th morning. Panorama of what used to be a soccer field a few years ago. Now it is a marsh and home to harrumphing frogs, new trees, flowers, and a whole rich ecosystem.
