Introduce yourself with four spaceships.

Been working on another USAF commission. This one is related to the Dyna-Soar. A reusable booster designed by Boeing with a recoverable booster stage.

I was sent pictures of the Dyna-Soar model I made fully printed, painted and ready for display.

I'm supper happy about this, it feels so good to see something I made professionally finished for display.

Here's some of the X-20 Dyna-Soar material I received to use as reference for the model. I really like the diagrams, the shallow cargo bay was a surprise to me.

The wood #cubesat has a flight computer! A small Pi Zero 2 W (not mounted yet, just on the top shelf to show scale). Up next is the power supply components.

If you would like to help the project, there is a GoFundMe

A very interesting custom print job I did. It's a 3x vertical exaggeration of Copernicus crater on the moon. The lines from (I belive) the orbital mapping passes are even visible.

This one is actually going to my father for display at his observatory.

Hey @scottmanley.bsky.social I would be interested in your thoughts on wood satellite frames, such as the Japanese Lignosat 1, or my little project.

I started a GoFundme for the wood cubesat project. I don't expect much honestly, but even just $50 would cover the flight computer and a few other components.

Oh hey SENTINEL. I mad a model of that for a client recently.

I'm happy the FLIP was rescued. such a unique science ship.

I'm going to start a crowd funding campaign for the wood cubesat. I don't expect to raise any money for it at all. But I would rather try and fail then not try at all.

stay tuned.

When it comes to relativistic spaceflight. I always like capping the top speed to around 70.7% the speed of light. From the ships perspective you have functional light speed, and the time dilation from Earth's perspective isn't that bad.

I encountered a mystery growth in my garden today. It appears to be some kind of slime mold.

Suprisingly, the spring washers are doing a remarkably good job preventing nut loosening under heavy vibration of the frame. A low offgassing loctite will still be used for added strength.

Version 1 of the wood cubesat frame goes together pretty good. The brackets do need to be properly made for an ideal assembly. And I might modify how the rods attach to the frame. But otherwise I'm optimistic so far.

The total amount of metal in the cubesat frame is minimal which is what I'm going for. Those brackets are handmade and aren't flight hardware, they are just for testing until I get the proper tools to make better ones.

Needed to gently clean oil and grease off the tiny hardware for the wood cubesat (bolts rods spacers nuts washers ect). So I put them in a container with a water soap mix and used an electric toothbrush to make a very basic sonic cleaner. Worked remarkably well.

Manufacturing some of the small structural components for the wood cubesat. I do not have the proper tools so I had to make due with hand tools, impromptu jigs, and my dremel.

The cubesat parts have been in the vaccum chamber for 7 days now. Although I realistically can't reduce the wood off gassing to 0, I can atleast pull out the more volitile compounds. Heating in the vaccum probably would do more, but eh. This is just the prototype.

The parts showed up! I'm very pleased so far, the parts fit together while still having tolerances between the tabs so they don't need to be pressed into place with force.

They will now spend the next week in the vaccum chamber degassing.

I know it had a ton of problems financially, logistically, and the program suffered from poor decisions.

But from a purely aesthetic standpoint I really miss the Space shuttle. I want big space planes to be a thing again.

A surprisingly popular addition to my shop. A simple retro sci-fi style rocket ship! It's a blank canvas to make it whatever aesthetic you like! I might make a spherical spaceship next.

I got the design for the wood #cubesat frame done. It does have slightly less internal volume due to the walls being 4mm thick, but that's a structural necessity. The frame will be held under compression when assembled with 4 rods. And 8 brackets on the corners, minimal metal.

I needed a tool to hold fine grit sandpaper for doing detailed sanding jobs so I made one. And it works pretty good on small things so I figured I would also sell them.
