Yeah, it's rather dark in North Karelia too. This time of the year is very uneventful. Can't really fish, too dark to hike and there's no snow for skiing.

I'll just go to the gym and have a social media break until the snow arrives so I can post forest skiing pictures.

Northern Finnish Lapland goes dark as polar night begins
The area's period of darkness will continue until mid-January.

November-to-date temperature anomalies in Finland.

It is somewhat rare to have such a strong contrast between south and north: usually temperature anomalies are well correlated over large (~1000 km) distances.

#BlackWeek North Karelia specials: finishing the free gym session in the morning when it is still very dark outside and coming back home to plan a hike to a solar-powered open hut for the weekend.

Now that we are likely to cross 1.5°C, there is increasing discussion on "overshoot".

There is a lot of uncertainties on overshoot, but there is one thing that we are 100% sure about:

GHG emissions need to go down >90% in decades for overshoot to be a reality.

The winter gets postponed again. The worst weather is when the temperature seesaws around 0°C, it rains or slushes, and the whole day is dark. This is the typical #Winter climate in Fennoscandia in the future.

The moral vacuity of signing up to "a “just, orderly and equitable” transition away from fossil fuels" because fossil fuel GHG emissions are incompatible with the 1.5°C goal, then immediately reaffirming that Australia will "continue to develop new fossil fuel projects"

Extremely cold conditions have prevailed under surface inversion in Lapland now for several days. Some stations have not risen above -25 °C even in the daytime, which is exceptional for the time of the year.

For example, Kittilä Lompolonvuoma *highest* today is -27.1 °C.
