Attorney & Chief Program Officer (Legal, Policy, Organizing) at @ACLU of Virginia. Poet—NECK OF THE WOODS, Alice James Books. Teaching Law & Lit—UVA Law. Legal aid alum. Former bartender. she/her.
Words here = mine alone.
Before I got to UVA & took Greg's workshop my first year, I honestly believed no one was actually still writing poems/books anymore—all poets were long dead.

This was the poem that first made me realize you could do anything in a poem. This poem was a golden ticket for me, doing so much so simply.

it's not that i ever doubted that being a barista was a skilled position, but my year-long effort to try to produce a half-decent latte at home has convinced me that a good barista is easily more skilled than virtually every c-suite executive on the planet

The Times interviewed dozens of migrant men sent to a prison in El Salvador by the Trump administration. Independent forensic analysts called the testimony credible and consistent and said the treatment met the U.N.’s definition of torture.

Added benefit: connect a campaign like this w/shifting narrative around "public safety" & redefining what it means away from fear & punishment systems. "Safety" *is* later library hours, skate parks, infrastructure, green spaces, community centers, skillshares, &c

(but also: 💜Build a skate park 💜)
It doesn’t matter what I think. Also, none of this would ever happen. But if I had a zillion dollars:

1. Run a “we do hard things” campaign across southern and rust belt states. Invest heavily in local, state and regional social infrastructure. Sponser later hours at a library, build a skate park…
If I were to sum up my advice to the Democratic party leadership about how to defeat Trumpism, it would be to set aside policy for now and focus instead on articulating a vision of what American society should look like and what role the US should play in a rapidly changing world today.
