B-line does that in Portland! 😊 A full truck drops things off at a warehouse, and then the cargo bikes take over.

It means fewer big trucks maneuvering through 19th century streets, having to find parking, and blocking visibility outside of storefronts.

Here's the same data with another section added showing the percentage of total deaths for people using each of the transportation modes involved in the fatal crashes.

Good: crash deaths are down.

Bad: it's getting safer to be in a car and less safe to be a pedestrian when there's a fatal crash.

Got lucky. Took everything my small town coastal school had by age 15, so my sentence was commuted and graduated early. Came back to teach there 20 yrs later for a while, what a trip.

it also seems like the anti governance wing of portland politics (the oregonian; pdxreal; various cranky conservatives) turned the staffing issue into a Controversy and spooked some of the councilors

Lots of reasons, stated and unstated. My takes: 1) the old council (wrongly) left key decisions to the new council, 2) the new council wasn't properly onboarded to know that they were short-staffed, 3) a tight budget and inexperienced council, and 4) years of How Things Are Done in Portland inertia.
