That is exactly what I have added to the version below! I took the lazy route and have bit0 of the 'sand grain index' decide the direction for now. Alternatively, these could be piles of corn that need a certain Harry or some geese to collect :)

Many 6502 tutorials online, visit 6502.org and stardot.org.uk, disassemble and hack a few games :) I'm sure it will be easier than in your childhood with all modern tools/resources
