🚨New article🚨 The consensus is that contestation pushed central banks to talk 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 about inequality & climate.

Our theory: At first, CBs seek to ward off politicization by talking 𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴 about controversial topics.

We tested this 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐡𝐲𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐬.🧵

"cut the time senior bankers must wait before receiving their full bonuses from eight years to four years"

Idk, aren't we currently learning that four years is nothing when it comes to the duration of asset price bubbles?

the British macro elite is finally saying what I and others have been pointing out for nearly 5 years:

we need a new institutional framework that reduces the fiscal powers of central banks, in particular the Bank of England

We need a new monetary-fiscal settlement
A fresh regime is required for a world of high debt and large central bank balance sheets

This is excellent, on three types of uncertainty central banks are facing (and that won't go away anytime soon).

I distinguish three types of political uncertainty to provide an initial framework to think about the ways this manifests in central bankers' work: domestic, transnational, and dynamic

L’approche néo-schumpeterienne de Philippe Aghion a largement inspiré les politiques économiques en Europe depuis le tournant des années 2000. Et singulièrement celle d’Emmanuel Macron 1/

Some news: In 2026-27, I'll be visiting professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, leading the theme seminar on

‘𝘌𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘨𝘭𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘭 𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘮𝘺‘

There's no place quite like the IAS to think, together, about big questions. Please share—applications are open 𝚗̲̲𝚘̲̲𝚠̲.

Does a new generation of social scientists have to publish more to achieve less? (from 2019)
blogs.lse.ac.uk/impactofsoci... Intuition says "yes", and so says data for sociology.
Figure from blog post: Shows how much 342 new assistant professors had published at the time they began their first jobs. For Assistant Professors and newly promoted Associate Professors, there is an upward trend from early 1990s to late 2010s. The trend is stronger for Associate Professors.

Great visual story on mega batteries that will go straight onto the PE of the green transition syllabus.

Note the 1GWh cutoff here but nonetheless: a nasty picture for Europe. Chile on the other hand, impressive.

Going through some history of climate politics notes from last week, I realize we dont appreciate enough the climate mobilization of mid2010s and subsequent electoral green wave of late 2010s.

That moment was never really meant to be in the cards and we need to better study how we got there
