Some papers are a long time in the making. This one, written with the excellent @iguinaudeau.bsky.social, took long and I am incredibly grad to see it published. 1/8 journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

So what's next? Macron will probably try to find a new candidate for Prime minister, but none of the presidential hopefuls will take that risk. Naming political hasbeens like Barnier or Bayrou has not worked. New elections are thus likely with no guarantee for a less fragemented parliament. end/

In a nutshell, Macron's snap elections of 2024 have left French politics in an unprecedented state of fragmentation and uncertainty. Prime minister Bayrou has been struggling to get (some) things done nonetheless, but the vote of confidence is ultimately a way to admit that he failed. 7/

In this context, calling for a confidence vote is not very common but actually ressembles the use of the "guillotine" (art. 49.3), i.e. a way to force allies to stick to the coalition, as shown by Huber (1996): support my budget or make me step down... 4/ www.cambridge.org/core/books/r...

Even that is not always granted: as the next presidential election lures (spring of 2027), many party leaders start looking (very) nervously at the polls, leading to hesitations, public attacks on the government etc. (for instance on local electoral system reform) 3/ www.lesechos.fr/politique-so...

France's prime minister François Bayrou has - somewhat unexpectedly - called for a vote of confidence this week, scheduled to take place on 8 September. This follows debates over the summer over harsh austerithy measures announced for the 2026 Finance Bill. A little context. 1/

This week's column asks a question that should be in everyone's minds, as Trump reshapes the world's alliances:

How, given that our defence and security capacities are completely infiltrated by the US state, do we defend ourselves if the US becomes our opponent? www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
The question no one dares ask: what if Britain has to defend itself from the US? | George Monbiot
So much of our intelligence and military systems are shared or reliant on the US – if it becomes the enemy, it is already inside the gates, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

Twitter is completely down and the price of Tesla is in full collapse. It's a bad day for Elon.
A screenshot of a Cloudflare error page showing a "Timeout occurred" message with error code 524. The message states that the origin web server (Twitter.com) failed to respond in time. The diagnostic icons show that the user's browser and Cloudflare's Dallas server are working correctly, but the Twitter host server has an error. The page includes explanations of what happened and possible actions to take. A screenshot of Tesla Inc.'s stock performance on March 10 at 1:08 PM EDT. The stock is priced at $227.54, showing a sharp decline of 35.13 points (13.37%) for the day. The chart illustrates a downward trend from an opening price of $252.54, with a high of $253.37 and a low of $227.54. Other financial details include a market cap of $713.52 billion and a P/E ratio of 111.63.

"SCOTUS allows Trump admin to deport people to random countries with no notice"

Honestly still can't believe that I wrote this headline today, let alone that the U.S. Supreme Court's majority did so.
SCOTUS allows Trump admin to deport people to random countries with no notice
Justice Sotomayor called the order a "gross ... abuse" of the court's authority. Also: Law Dork in the media.
