I marched in the No Kings rally against Trump in Denver today. It was huge, at least 5, maybe ten times the crowd of 5,000 that matched during the summer. So maybe 25,000 to 5,000 people. Similar marches are taking place in over 200 other cities.

The Republican view is that businesses should negotiate directly with the president to carve out economic zones of operation for themselves.

I realize that this is an expansive claim so I want to show my work:

The government intervened in Nippon Steel’s purchase of U.S. Steel and Trump personally negotiated the terms, abrogating to the government a “Golden Share” in the company that gives the government express rights to veto factory closures, salary negotiations—even the naming of the conglomerate.

The government negotiated the sale of TikTok to a consortium of hand-picked Trump allies at far below market price.

The government “purchased” a 10 percent stake in Intel, at below market price.

Republicans plan to create a Sovereign Wealth Fund through which the government can literally choose businesses and markets to invest in.

The administration has manipulated the prices of certain crypto assets in order to exert market influence.

Trump’s tariffs have individually negotiated carveouts for certain businesses and even whole industries.

CEOs are so cognizant of the fact that their businesses operate at the sole discretion of the Trump administration that they seek his favor by presenting tributes of gold to the president in ritualized ceremonies.

As I said: There is no reasonable way to interpret these actions except as a wholesale rejection of capitalism and the free market by the Republican party.
