Whilst I am not comfortable with the cult of personality developing around Mkhwanazi, just saying he was on leave during the July unrest is a misrepresentation - and also omits the detail that his wife was giving birth, hardly a mysterious absence

You state in the article that Mkhwanazi was on leave during the July unrest. In testimony at SAHRC hearings he stated he went on leave on 19 July, although Minister Mapisa-Nqakula claimed it was 17 July. So he was not on leave for most of the unrest, see the Expert Panel report:
