Dried fruit is the bomb, yo, why did I not discover this years ago?

Well, OK, I've always liked golden raisins, although sometimes I forget they exist. It's funny, because I've also always thought the regular kind were profoundly meh, even though I like purple grapes more than green ones.

I don't even have to click on this to be certain that the replies to it are an absolute shitshow, which... fair!
Bad news: Senator John Fetterman's book isn't selling. We need to support our Democratic senators if we want to take back Congress in 2026. That means walking the walk and putting our money where our mouth is — even if we disagree sometimes.

Support the Fetterman Book Fund!

I always forget what a pain in the ass it is to attach the lanyard to a Maglite Solitaire in the time it takes the one on my keychain to wear out and need to be replaced.

Meanwhile, this was lunch today: five whole mini-meatballs.

Note 1: Frozen meatballs do up really well in the air fryer. They get all crispy on the outside.

Note 2: That pyramid formation was completely accidental. When I dumped them out of the fryer basket into the bowl, that's how they landed.

I've been watching a lot of videos about cooking different regional types of pizza, and I knew there were variations, but I had no idea how many. It's been a delicious-looking, vicarious education.

One more week 'til I can have (very small amounts of) pizza again...

I was just randomly reminded of the time @rsybuchanan.com turned up for work on two successive nights in a tuxedo and a prison jumpsuit, respectively, because, paraphrasing from memory, "I haven't had time to do laundry." :)

I have a sudden craving for batter-dipped fish fillets. I don't even like fish.

Once you go through the standard process of turning off/denying all the annoying stuff Windows has been doing since XP, and knock down its eccentricities (such as moving the start button back to where it belongs, in the lower left), Windows 11 feels like........ Windows 10 with revamped icons.

pointillism taken to a new level, or, the origins of ASCII art?
Holy shit, just learned about the typewriter art of Montserrat Alberich Escardívol, a Catalan typist. Using an extra wide typewriter and 180 color ribbons, she built up elaborate images from simple characters like 'm' and '.' and ';'. Here is her typewritten painting of the Cathedral of Barcelona.

Today is the 50th anniversary of the wreck of the Great Lakes freighter Edmund Fitzgerald, so here is an amazing cover of the late Gordon Lightfoot's 1976 hit song about same.

corollary: the people who MADE the damn thing have plenty of all three, and in evaluating the output of their creations, it would be really great to know in advance what the latter two were
as a computer scientist, i am BEGGING people to realize that there is no cognition inside of an LLM

no reasoning, no thought process, no self-awareness

I read a lot of arguments (for AND against) LLMs, and both sides seem to think there’s a consciousness or intentionality or even a moral alignment

Today I learned that I've now reached an age where my formative period was long enough ago to have a "-punk" aesthetic. Evidently a sci-fi/spec-future/post-apocalyptic setting with a 1980s vibe is now "cassettepunk".
