This is basically my take on Fire Emblem Shadows, distilled into a single paragraph.

Fire emblem shadows is a weird game to even approach trying to talk about. On the one hand its gameplay is dreadfully simple, getting old incredibly quickly, lacking any kind of strategic depth and being online-only. On the other hand, this game has presentation at a standard I would expect from a mainline entry. The character art is some of the most beautiful and evocative designs since Echoes. The game is fully voiced with excellent performances across the board, and the script, while nothing special is far more rich when compared to heroes. I also really want to applaud Kurt, the main protagonist and their complicated relationship with gender identity, that was a gutsy choice and in my opinion is a very good sign of Fire Emblem’s willingness to shed its heteronormative identity and become a more inclusive and diverse franchise, even if they stumble along the way. There are massive amounts of good here, and the games uncertain future is a real shame because of all that good present. – I just wish I could say the same for how it treats the legacy characters who feature as guests.
