Though as I’ve written elsewhere, China’s framing of Takaichi’s comments on Taiwan was blown up just to draw a red line, decontextualizing and blowing up comments that were incredibly mild

Taiwan's cautious embrace of Japan's new hawkish prime minister
Taipei welcomes Takaichi's comments on Taiwan, even as Japan's right wing uses island for its own ends

I was thinking about how funny this cartoon is because basically the things Takaichi is right-wing on (arguing for traditional gender roles, being anti-gay, hawkish foreign policy) are all shared with today’s China. Hm, almost like a certain government isn’t left-wing at all

#TaiwanArchives: Pingtung's Wandan Township is famous for a mud #volcano that intermittently flares up with sludge and flames. This 1969 video depicts a big eruption spewing mud over farmland, prompting a clean-up with rakes and ox. The natural phenomenon releases the build-up of subterranean gases.

The Dutch did not leave many loanwords in Taiwan, but those they did leave are super interesting. You'd think that the word for cabbage, gaolicai 高麗菜, means 'Korean vegetable'? Nah. Say it in Hokkien: Ko-lê(-tshài), from Dutch 'kool' (Ger. Kohl, engl. cole) XD 😁

#TaiwanArchives: In 1955, #Taipei welcomed the arrival of the bone relics of #Xuanzang (玄奘), a Tang dynasty monk who traveled to India to procure 657 Buddhist scriptures. His 17-year pilgrimage was immortalized in the Chinese classic "Journey to the West (西遊記)." The Śarīra, however, came from Japan.

The smaller #turkey was bred by the US Department of Agriculture for family-friendly portions. The "USDA White" originated from Beltsville, Maryland and matured faster than larger varieties.

#Taiwan distributed pamphlets on promoting this bird and enriching poultry feed (維他命甲乙丙丁 = vitamins ABCD).
